Anchor Spotlight: University of Chicago Medicine

· Anchor Spotlight,UCM

On June 21st, The University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) hosted their third annual Strategic Supplier Conference. The UCM leadership team discussed their strategic plans to drive improvement for fiscal year 2017 to more than 100 attendees representing 56 strategic suppliers, and challenged them to create solutions to help UCM meet its business objectives. According to Mike Carey, Director of Supply Chain Purchasing, UCM hosts this annual conference because they continue to “challenge their supply chain to be more strategic, rather than tactically driven.” UCM views itself as a partner with its suppliers, and therefore prioritizes building a network through the development of relationships with key stakeholders in their supply chain.

This year, special focus was given to UCM’s commitment to grow local and diverse businesses in the Chicagoland area. As one of the first anchor institutions involved with CASE, UCM actively looks to increase direct and second tier spend with local and minority owned businesses.

UCM actively incorporates diversity goals into their operations and requires suppliers to provide quarterly reports showing their organization's diversity spend and ideas on how to continue to advance purchasing with local minority-owned businesses. To recognize suppliers for their local and minority business engagement efforts, CASE’s Executive Director, Nitika Nautiyal, and UCM’s Vice President of Supply Chain, Jonathan Stegner, presented two awards at the conference. Boston Scientific received the award for “Top Tier II Supplier Diversity Program” and Aramark Corporation earned the award for “Top Chicago Local Impact Supplier.” CASE was a sponsor of these inaugural awards.

“UCM’s conference serves as an example for other CASE anchors to follow. This conference is beneficial to all attendees, as the contributors to UCM’s supply chain are able to learn about UCM’s future objectives and align with their priorities,” said Nitika.
